On Friday, the health ministry reported that India has recorded 797 new cases of COVID-19, marking the highest number of cases in 225 days. Additionally, the number of active infection cases has been documented at 4,091.
According to a report by The Indian Express (IE), India has recorded a minimum of 83 cases of the new JN.1 Covid-19 variant. The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), a genome sequencing panel, has identified 34 sequences in Gujarat, 18 in Goa, 8 in Karnataka, 7 in Maharashtra, 5 in Kerala, and 5 in Rajasthan, 4 in Tamil Nadu, and 2 in Telangana. INSACOG, established by the central government, serves as a platform to oversee genome sequencing and monitor virus variations of circulating COVID-19 strains in India.
According to data from mygov. in, the country recorded a total of 409 fresh Covid-19 cases within the past 24 hours. Kerala, with 4,091 active cases, holds the highest number of infections nationwide. Additionally, Karnataka reported 433 new cases of Covid-19.
The minister emphasized that although the new variants are not harmful, people must remain vigilant and adhere to safety measures. It’s important not to overreact and assume that the virus is rapidly spreading and causing fatalities.
As per the ministry’s official website, the total count of individuals who have successfully recovered from the illness exceeds 44 million, resulting in a national recovery rate of 98.81 percent. Additionally, the website reports that a staggering 220.67 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in the country thus far.
Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj highlighted on December 27 that the COVID-19 positivity rate in the national capital stands at approximately 1 percent. He stressed the importance of exercising caution rather than succumbing to panic during the winter holiday season.
